Kenya continues partnership with China to develop railway infrastructure
According to railway news portal Railway Supply, as of March 4, 2024, the national railway company Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has received a large number of freight wagons from China.
Of these, 230 are used on the modern Mombasa-Nairobi standard gauge railway line, and 200 are used on the narrow gauge railway, built in the early 1900s.

KRC received its last batch of 50 standard gauge freight wagons in February 2024, with the rest expected to arrive at the Port of Mombasa in May that year.
The new trucks have a lifting capacity of 70 tons, which will speed up the movement of container cargo at the Port of Mombasa.
They will replace outdated rolling stock, which has been operating on the narrow-gauge network for more than 40 years.
In addition, the vehicles will be used to transport coiled steel, tank containers, metal products and other cargo.
Data from the Kenya Ministry of Roads and Transport shows an increase in traffic on both the narrow gauge network and the modern Mombasa-Nairobi line.
In 2023, the volume of standard gauge rail freight will reach 6.53 million tons, which is 7% more than in 2022. Passenger traffic also increased significantly – by 12%.
The 1,435mm wide line connecting Nairobi and Mombasa began operations in May 2017 and was later extended to Naivasha in 2019.
